Capt. Modjeski is a certified Coastal Ecologist, Fisheries Biologist, and the Habitat Restoration Program Director for the American Littoral Society (Society) with over 26 years of experience in science-based coastal restoration and biological monitoring. He has a B.S in Marine Biology and an M.S. in Environmental Policy and Management with a focus on wildlife and fisheries management. On behalf of the Society, he has managed numerous restoration projects in New Jersey and New York to include living shorelines, beach restoration, salt marsh restoration, maritime forest creation, flood control, oyster reef creation, marine debris removal, and fish passage. Since Hurricane Sandy, he and his team have restored over 56.5 acres of beach in Delaware Bay, constructed 5 intertidal oyster reefs and 1 subtidal oyster reef, created a maritime forest, restored 7.5 acres of farm-field, built one of the largest rain gardens in south Jersey, restored and revegetated an area along Barrett’s Run in Cumberland County to better protect fish habitat, built a 600’ long fish passage between the Atlantic Ocean and Wreck Pond in Spring Lake, NJ opening up 1.8 miles of river herring spawning habitat, started the Operation Oyster state-wide campaign, removed over 65 metric tons of marine debris from Jamaica Bay, NY, and continues one of the largest horseshoe crab tagging programs. He is also a Licensed USCG Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels, logging over 688 days at sea.
